Circle of Friends:
Uniting to be Smoke-Free

Tobacco-related disease kills more than 480 women each day, making it the leading cause of preventable death in this country. To raise awareness about this major women’s health issue, the American Legacy Foundation, a 501(c)(3) public health foundation, created Circle of Friends: Uniting to be Smoke-Free.

Circle of Friends is a growing movement of people and organizations supporting women who are trying to lower their risk for tobacco-related disease by quitting smoking. For most people, quitting smoking can be difficult, but smokers who have support—such as a "circle of friends"—are up to 50 percent more likely to quit for good.

In addition, by combining this social support with the use of nicotine replacement products like the patch or gum, prescription medications, and counseling (individual, group or telephone), smokers can greatly increase their chances of quitting.
